Modern Formations Gallery Exhibit - Winter Frames

Santas' Hanging
 Happy New Year, my friends!
I hope it brings happiness and joy and that your resolutions are resolved :)

Until January 14th, I will have the two above pictures hanging at Modern Formations Gallery on Penn Avenue in Garfield.  It is an interesting exhibit because you, the visitors, are the jury.  Vote for your favorites as the artists are vying for a three artist exhibit at the gallery in August, 2012.  The site for the Gallery is:
There, you will find the gallery schedule, although, it is not a normal schedule for area galleries.  I enjoyed entering and hope you will stop by and vote if the gallery schedule fits yours!

Late Fall Afternoon at Calvary Episcopal Church

Advent Wreath

East End Sky

Winter Garden

Church Window

Reflection in the Lamp

Window Lights
This week, I accompanied a friend to photograph the outside garden and windows at Calvary Episcopal Church.  The warm, late fall temperatures outside allowed for green shots in the garden.  The sunny day cast great light through the windows, which was reflected on interesting interior surfaces.  More in the flickr photostream.

Golden Hour

Sunset on Waves

Traps and Buoys

In this week's Digital Photography School newsletter,, I read an article about the Golden Hour for taking photographs.  This is described as early in the morning and in the evening; not what color the light is.  But, I instantly thought of my photographs of sunsets in both Florida and Maine.  Not only were they taken in the evening, they turned out to have golden light as well.  More in the flickr photostream.

Leaf Shadows

Bend and Stretch

Eiffel Tower

 Wooly Mammoth
Last weekend, we had sunny weather for my exercise effort in the mornings.  I was totally distracted by the wonderful shapes cast by the leaves' shadows.  Today, I will just see puddles!

Recently, NPR posted a link about Life Magazine at 75.  The link is

Wildflowers - In Honor of Phil Being in Potter County Tonight

Devil's Paint Brush

Devil's Paint Brush

It is funny that I am thinking wildflower pictures from around the cabin while Phil is there; especially since he called about 20 minutes ago to tell me he had encountered a bear within 20+ feet minutes before :/  Fortunately, he walks with the bear spray he gave me for my birthday on 'ready' at all times and none was needed.  He is up at our camp for archery deer season.  Hopefully, he will only be seeing friendly four footeds from now on.

Drawing Lesson

Before and After

Yesterday afternoon, I attended a drawing workshop held by the Pittsburgh Society of Artists and taught by artist, Elizabeth Myers Castonguay.  What an experience!  The other attendees and I were greeted by Elizabeth and welcomed to her beautiful space in the Terminal Building on South Carson Street - candles, roses and music helped to calm my fears of failure.  I admitted to her earlier in an email that I hadn't been taught to draw since the 5th grade and certainly hadn't practiced the skill since.  I warned her that I might be challenged!

We were given the tools for drawing and set up at easels with seasonal still lifes ready for the afternoon's work.  Fifteen minutes into the exercise, I had completed the first picture above.  Instructions followed and off we went to put them into action.  The three other attendees are painters and used to drawing, so I knew I was the novice.  I had no reason to worry, though, as all were supportive and enthusiastic.  As you can see from the second picture above, I learned about values and shading, showing volume and other aspects of the art.

By week's end, all of our before and after pieces should be on Elizabeth's website in an area where she posts students' work.  If you are ever able to take a workshop with Elizabeth, jump at the chance - you won't regret it!

PS.  Don't worry, I am not giving up photography.  I know I have a lot of lessons and practice ahead of me if I wish to switch or even add a new medium!  :)

Maine 2011 Sailing

It was a lot of fun sailing with the Sailing Divas while in Harpswell.  I joined a threesome of learning sailors in an Ensign captained by my cousin, Beth.  The Divas venture out twice a week during the summer to learn the ropes, so to speak, and have a terrific time.  I was made an honorary member of the group and will be sporting one of their very fashionable hats in the not too distant future :)  More shots in the flickr photostream.

Maine 2011 Evening Light

Yellow Sky

Self Portrait Among the Stones
"Red sky at night...." truly foretold the wonderful weather we had during my visit to Harpswell.  The evening light was beautiful, but disappeared quickly as we traipsed between islands for a last night shoot.  More shots in the flickr photostream.

Potter County 2011 Down Creek

Young Buck

Creek Jewels Sunlit

White Trees

Mid-August morning light in Potter County is hypnotizing to me - I have to be out in it!  On this particular morning, I put on my water shoes and jeans and traipsed into the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning Creek to catch some shots.  I encountered young bucks, creek jewels and lots of reflections.  The creek came up to my mid-thigh at points - chilling, yet refreshing.  More shots in the flickr photostream.

Maine 2011 Fog Bank

One morning in Maine, I woke to a new photography experience out in the bay.  A fog bank had rolled in over a calm sea.  The light was incredible!  More shots in the flickr photostream.
