Photograph of the Week

Lilac at Calvary

When the lilacs bloom, it really is spring!  I think the snow that continued late into April is finally done.  What fun it is to be with my Calvary gardening friends this time of year.  We get to care for the historic grounds and the lovingly donated plants.

Wildflowers - In Honor of Phil Being in Potter County Tonight

Devil's Paint Brush

Devil's Paint Brush

Wildflowers
It is funny that I am thinking wildflower pictures from around the cabin while Phil is there; especially since he called about 20 minutes ago to tell me he had encountered a bear within 20+ feet minutes before :/  Fortunately, he walks with the bear spray he gave me for my birthday on 'ready' at all times and none was needed.  He is up at our camp for archery deer season.  Hopefully, he will only be seeing friendly four footeds from now on.

A Trip to the Zoo

Dragonfish

Giraffes

Goldfish

This week, I met my sorority sister, Diane, for a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.  For me, the visit involved a change of seasons since the last time I'd been there.  But for Diane, it had been more than 30 years since she had visited.  What a jewel we have in Highland Park!  More shots in the flickr photostream.

Weeds by the Road

Weeds by the Road

Weeds by the Road

Although I am not a gardener, I am a flower appreciator; especially wildflowers.  These were along Marvelwood Place tonight.

Wet, wet, wet!

The current weather in Pittsburgh reminds me of August, 2009 at our cabin.  We could dash out between storms to fish, hike or shoot photos, but only for half hours at a time.  My shoots that trip were along the lines of when given lemons, make lemonade.

Trillium Trail, Squaw Run Road, Fox Chapel

Trillium

Virginia Bluebells

Skunk Cabbage

Visited the Trail today and if you want to see the Trillium in bloom, it is time to go!  This week, the weather is predicted to be warm and wet.  Heat depreciates this wildflower mecca.  Currently in bloom, I saw Trillium (three types), Spring Beauty, Virginia Bluebells, Cutleaf Toothwart, Trout Lilly, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and purple and yellow Violets.  Soon to blossom are Mayapple, Bloodroot, Iris and Broadleaf Toothwort.  More pictures in the flickr photostream.

Car Graveyard

Grave Plot

Bouquet

Planter

The second stop on Dan's and my adventure in Rogers, OH was a car graveyard. The beautiful wild flowers and lovely day softened the effect of the airbags employed, broken windshields and bald tires. As I shot, I worried and wondered about the drivers who had had these accidents and their passengers. I hoped and prayed that they had not only survived, but had flourished since their incident. I hope when Dan and I pass that way again, the graveyard will not be more crowded. More in flickr photostream.

Potter County Summer Trip

Three Blind Mice

Lichen Action Figure

Stump

The eastern coast hot spell was evident while we were in Potter County, PA. It was hot, hot, hot! I never thought I would be glad we got an air conditioner for the cabin, but I was. Enough on the the weather..... the birds were quiet, there were very few bugs and it was great to read on the porch, take pictures and look for heart rocks in the creek. And yes, I spent some time removing unwanted residents. More in flickr photostream.

Thistle

Flying In

Thistle Silk

Yesterday morning while 'trudging' in the neighborhood, I stopped to photograph a big patch of thistle. Most of it has gone to seed, but there were a few surprises. More in the flickr photostream.

Butterflies

Butterfly and Chihuly

Butterflies

During the first week in June, I visited Columbus, OH. One morning we spent two wonderful hours touring the Franklin Park Conservatory (www.fpconservatory.org). One of the rooms was ablaze with butterflies!

Foggy Day

Fountain with Weed

Up River

A couple of weeks ago, I ventured out with my camera at 7 am to capture some fog shots. My first stop was the Trillium Trail and Squaw Run Creek area of Fox Chapel. The second stop was Squaw Valley Park in O'Hara. The small lake there is beautiful with a fountain and many water plants. My last stop was on the Allegheny River. The density of the fog on the river softened the road noises as the mist drifted across the water. The water fowl were heard, but not seen except for the hawk. More shots in the flickr photostream.
