Photographs of the Week

Harpswell

Dinghy

Last month I visited my cousins in Maine.  I got to explore some new areas with a photographer friend, but some of the best scenes are right before your eyes!  I never tire of photographing this incredible view.

Ragged Island

In a previous blog, I said I would talk about my adventure on Ragged Island in Harpswell, ME.  Until 1950, the island was owned by the poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay.  My cousins and friends took me out in the dark of night by motorboat for a sleepover on the island.  Tents were constructed of old sails, sheets and blankets.  We stayed warmed by a driftwood fire, drank wine and (they) sang.

The next morning broke warm and sunny.  I took this picture which we have always called, "The Album Cover."  What a wonderful memory ...

Photograph of the Week

Bear Skull

When I took this last March, I was trolling my inner Georgia O'Keeffe.  We have quite a collection of skulls, antlers and such around here collected from the Fox Chapel Area and from Potter County, PA which I use as muses.  I have been thinking about Georgia as I read "Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay."  In addition to Edna, Georgia and Alfred Stieglitz were busy making their marks on the art world during the 1920's.  As a matter of fact, so was my grandfather's cousin, Witter Bynner.  I have found out while reading this tome that Witter actually asked Edna to marry him.  He did, however, withdraw the proposal.  I will discuss the wonderful time I spent on Edna's island in Casco Bay during another post.

Maine Trip

It has been ages since I blogged!

Earlier this month I had a wonderful trip to Maine with my son, Philip.  We visited many beloved relatives and friends, saw some lovely sights and enjoyed being refreshed by the loving environment and salt air!

Oh, and we took pictures  : )  I am enclosing some panos and other faves.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Golden Hour

Paddler

Sunset on Waves

Traps and Buoys

Cormorant
In this week's Digital Photography School newsletter, newsletter@digital-photography-school.com, I read an article about the Golden Hour for taking photographs.  This is described as early in the morning and in the evening; not what color the light is.  But, I instantly thought of my photographs of sunsets in both Florida and Maine.  Not only were they taken in the evening, they turned out to have golden light as well.  More in the flickr photostream.

Maine 2011 Sailing

It was a lot of fun sailing with the Sailing Divas while in Harpswell.  I joined a threesome of learning sailors in an Ensign captained by my cousin, Beth.  The Divas venture out twice a week during the summer to learn the ropes, so to speak, and have a terrific time.  I was made an honorary member of the group and will be sporting one of their very fashionable hats in the not too distant future :)  More shots in the flickr photostream.
