Looking Through Some Oldies!

Junk Yard Cars

Tines and Brush

Junk Yard Car

Sometime in the 90's during a trip to Delaware, Ohio, Jim's mother introduced me to a fabulous local junk yard.  I think I took three rolls of black and white film that first trip!  It was the new era of C-41 and I had the pictures put on a small disc as well as getting negatives for the darkroom.  Two years ago, I started a project of going through all of my negatives and discs to "organize" them better.  Yeah, right, Ruthanne!  Anyway, I put the discs in the only computer in the house that still has a slot for that size and saved them on a flash drive to be added to my collection.  I found these the other day as I was looking through that collection and love the tone the C-41 processing gave to them.  Not sure where the other ones landed, but they will show up somewhere : )

First Day of Winter

Snowy Drive

One of my favorite seasons for photography is back!  Actually, all four seasons are my favorites, but there is nothing like snow for black and white images.

I wish my followers, friends and all Blog visitors a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Pink Falls

River Walk

Yes, the Duck was big stuff this fall in Pittsburgh, no argument there.  I posted photos of it in one of my latest blog posts.  But, Pittsburgh and its rivers are always a big part of my photography story.

Pink Falls is an example of Pittsburgh's Breast Cancer Awareness when pink-dyed water runs under the Convention Center.  Walking down the river walk is always grand, but on a bright fall day with the Duck in the distance, it was truly a special treat.  The stiff breeze off the Allegheny even caused waves in the Convention Center pink pools.

More photography from this shoot here:

Thanks for looking!  I am always happy to get comments and suggestions.

Eye to Eye

Today, I finally got down to the Point to see the Duck.  It did make me smile : )  There was a big crowd enjoying some of the Duck's last hours in town.  The fountain was beautiful, too, with the wind making a great water show.

Alpacas July, 2013

Mop Do

Big Rack

Pennsylvania Farm

In early July, I went on a great trip to the Grove City, PA area with friends Karen Cuffaro and Genie DiChiazza.  Karen owns some alpacas, which live at Highland Alpaca.  The alpaca farm was amazing!  I had never met any of these calm, humming, beautiful animals before and became charmed by them instantly.  We hit it big when Karen drove us to an elk farm.  She had never seen the elks out in the field, but that day was to be special.  The herd was out grazing and was phenomenal!  Other attractions on the trip, besides being with your girlfriends, were Angus bulls and cows, PA farms and a red barn.  Thank you again, Karen, for a memorable experience.

Comments and suggestions always appreciated.

Walk in Garfield Part Two

Chimney Pot

Colorful Door

Natural Graffiti

Garfield in color as promised.  My gut feels more connected with urban photography in black and white, but the colors of last Tuesday's trip were brilliant and moving.  One not posted here, Picket Fence, is a favorite.  Jay and I met the great grandmother of the young children who feel the abandoned house is there own - having placed a chair on the stoop to hang out together in the alley.  That one and 50 more from the day are available for viewing at:

As always, comments and suggestions are always welcome.  Please call me for a photo trip : )

Walk in Garfield July, 2013

 Back Gate

Alley Garages

My friend, Jay Ressler, and I walked down a few streets and alleys of Garfield last week as a photography outing.  We started on Penn Avenue, traveled along Gem Way and ended our trip on Dearborn Street.  The above are a sampling of my black and white shots from that trip.  More can be seen on flickr at   The color series will be posted soon.  Questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome!

River Walk July, 2013

Highland Park Bridge

Purple Loosestrife

Today was one of the HHH days of Pittsburgh's summers - hazy, hot and humid.  Back in the 1960's, my family home did not have air conditioning except for a huge, loud, used window air conditioner in my parents' bedroom.  My mother always closed up the house in the morning to capture the cool air our roof overhangs and large oak trees offered.  She also suggested that I get "acclimated" to the heat and to understand that "Fox Chapel is always naturally cooler."  Jump forward about 45 years and Jim still reminds me of my mother's sage advice : )

This afternoon I went down to the Allegheny River to see what the heavy rains might have left behind or brought out. I found a couple feathers, which I have added to the collection of feathers I will use to paint birds in water colors.  I also clipped some wild flowers to photograph for a current series.  Mostly, I just enjoyed being by the water and talking to the ducks.  More pictures at the flickr website:

Any comments, suggestions or volunteers for photography trips are always welcome!

I had the privilege of shooting JoAnne and Don Lightner's garden last week.  What a beautiful and peaceful haven it is!  Have been invited back when the day lilies are in bloom.
