Pettengill Farm

In June, 2005, while visiting my cousins in Maine, I had the opportunity to photograph interior portions of Pettengill Farm. Summer always brings me happy memories and thoughts of Maine, so I thought I would share this series now.

Pettengill Farm, a 19^th century salt-water farm on the estuary of the Harraseeket River, is owned by Freeport Historical Society (http://freeporthistoricalsociety.org/). It includes a saltbox house (ca. 1810) on 140 acres of fields, woods, antique apple orchards and salt marsh. Most interesting are the etchings (sgraffitti) found on the plaster walls in the upper chambers of ships, sea monsters, longboats and animals. The farmhouse remains without plumbing, central heat and electricity and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Millie Pettengill was its last resident and lived in the house until 1970. In addition to the website, Millie has a Facebook page which carries up-to-date information about events at the Farm. Had an interesting shopping trip last October on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. The retro clothing was fun, but why are the mannequins naked or dressed suggestively? I know they are inanimate objects, but if they were male mannequins, would they be naked or outfitted with a thong? Just asking!! More shots in the flickr photostream.

Memorial Day is upon us. Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville is full of memorials to soldiers, especially the unknowns. Let's remember heroes from our families and those whose names are unmarked, as all have fought for us and for our country. Strike the match to the grill and lift a toast to those who have served!!

South Side Nights

Carson Street

Last Friday, Silver Eye hosted a night photography class led by Martha Rial (http://www.martharial.com). My classmates and I walked around and shot the streets, shops and other sights along Carson Street for three hours. Martha was always available for sage advice and artistic suggestions. The weather was dry and warm and the subjects were lively. Our shoot was followed by a critique the next day. We had a grand time and learned a lot!! More shots in the flickr photostream.

Ohio Farm Series

I have a great interest in photographing old things; especially things that might not be there very long. One of my recurring subjects is Ohio farms. Several of this specific series appeared in the Black and White at 56 project, but before that were on exhibit in the New Works Gallery at Silver Eye Center for Photography in July of 2007.
