This week, I accompanied a friend to photograph the outside garden and windows at Calvary Episcopal Church. The warm, late fall temperatures outside allowed for green shots in the garden. In this week's Digital Photography School newsletter, newsletter@digital-photography-school.com, I read an article about the Golden Hour for taking photographs. This is described as early in the morning and in the evening; not what color the light is. But, I instantly thought of my photographs of sunsets in both Florida and Maine. It is funny that I am thinking wildflower pictures from around the cabin while Phil is there; especially since he called about 20 minutes ago to tell me he had encountered a bear within 20+ feet minutes before :/ Fortunately, he walks with the bear spray he gave me for my birthday on 'ready' at all times and none was needed. He is up at our camp for archery deer season. Hopefully, he will only be seeing friendly four footeds from now on.

Before and After

Yesterday afternoon, I attended a drawing workshop held by the Pittsburgh Society of Artists and taught by artist, Elizabeth Myers Castonguay. What an experience! The other attendees and I were greeted by Elizabeth and welcomed to her beautiful space in the Terminal Building on South Carson Street - candles, roses and music helped to calm my fears of failure. I admitted to her earlier in an email that I hadn't been taught to draw since the 5th grade and certainly hadn't practiced the skill since. I warned her that I might be challenged!

We were given the tools for drawing and set up at easels with seasonal still lifes ready for the afternoon's work. Fifteen minutes into the exercise, I had completed the first picture above. Instructions followed and off we went to put them into action. The three other attendees are painters and used to drawing, so I knew I was the novice. I had no reason to worry, though, as all were supportive and enthusiastic. As you can see from the second picture above, I learned about values and shading, showing volume and other aspects of the art.

By week's end, all of our before and after pieces should be on Elizabeth's website www.creationartstudio.com in an area where she posts students' work. If you are ever able to take a workshop with Elizabeth, jump at the chance - you won't regret it!

PS. Don't worry, I am not giving up photography. I know I have a lot of lessons and practice ahead of me if I wish to switch or even add a new medium! :)

Maine 2011 Sailing

It was a lot of fun sailing with the Sailing Divas while in Harpswell. I joined a threesome of learning sailors in an Ensign captained by my cousin, Beth. The Divas venture out twice a week during the summer to learn the ropes, so to speak, and have a terrific time. I was made an honorary member of the group and will be sporting one of their very fashionable hats in the not too distant future :) More shots in the flickr photostream.

Mid-August morning light in Potter County is hypnotizing to me - I have to be out in it! On this particular morning, I put on my water shoes and jeans and traipsed into the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning Creek to catch some shots. Pittsburgh graffiti is an ever changing source of photographs and series for me. Yinz is obviously a spray painted image from a cut-out. ANOK is a personal expression and I hope I read the letters correctly. I have photographed The Kid for several years as it appears in many neighborhoods. Most now are looking pretty old, so I have to wonder if new ones are being done. Other neighborhoods where The Kid has appeared are Bloomfield and the Strip District. As I create a better collection of the graffiti series, I will try to define neighborhoods and similarities. More in the flickr photostream.

I recently walked a few blocks of Penn Avenue in Lawrenceville. I diverted over to Mullberry Way toward downtown and over to Spring Way headed back. On Friday afternoon, I walked along the trail at the 13th Street Boat Ramp, Sharpsburg Borough. The weather was warm and humid with the sky suggesting a change. Fishing poles lined up near the dock. The beach and upper ground showed evidence of the flooding of the last few months. Glistening spots on the water captured great contrast to the dark clouds coming from the west. Today would have been my mother's 92nd birthday celebration. I remember a story from my childhood about how Hingham, MA, where my mother grew up, was always festooned with flags on her birthday. The young Sally always thought it was in her honor. I always supposed it was Flag Day, celebrated here on June 14th. It was actually in celebration of Bunker Hill Day. This holiday was originated and celebrated only in Suffolk County, MA, Hingham's home county. Our flag is flying this morning in honor of both of these important events!

My mother-in-law, Ruth Bauerle, was a James Joyce Scholar. She not only published many books and essays, but will always be admired and remembered in the academic community for her research and scholarly rigor. I miss her very much and, as this is the first Bloomsday Celebration since her death, will be attending an event today in her memory.

A quick, first trip to the cabin this weekend. The usual winter clean-up followed by photography shoots and time with Jim - Cornish game hens and spinach cooked to perfection topped off by an aromatic cigar! We even had a snapping turtle laying eggs in the field this morning while having our coffee; until I hit her with a golf ball!! More pictures in a later post.

Memorial Day Weekend, 2011

The 81st Annual Memorial Day Parade was held in Aspinwall this morning. I think I may have attended at least 20 during my lifetime. I began in the decorated bike section following the fire engines with my neighbor pals. My next phase was as a French horn player in the Blawnox Elementary marching band. I attended a number during my teen years as an observer, but then there was a break of about 15 years until Philip was in a stroller festooned with garland and a sun hat! What a kick it was to be strolling with other parents who I rode in the parade with as a child myself. Philip and Matthew road their decorated vehicles or roller blades for a number of years. They even had four or five babysitters who won the American Legion essay award at St. Scho's and who got to ride in the parade in a festooned car throwing candy to the crowd. There was a lot of cheering for the winners at every corner! I have a feeling that my next phase will be strolling in the parade again as life comes full circle.

Earlier today, I met with Ellen Neuberg at Gallerie Chiz to drop off some new pieces. The above images represent the Iowa and New York City series now there as matted prints. I also dropped off 50 note cards and three framed prints from the Off-Season series.

Saturday into Sunday was the 14th Annual Art All Night in Lawrenceville. The organization of the event was phenomenal - what a well-oiled machine! This was the first one I attended and I enjoyed volunteering for registration and as a mingler. I also really enjoyed the art and the ambiance. Looking forward to next year already!

Visited the Trail today and if you want to see the Trillium in bloom, it is time to go! This week, the weather is predicted to be warm and wet. Heat depreciates this wildflower mecca. Currently in bloom, I saw Trillium (three types), Spring Beauty, Virginia Bluebells, Cutleaf Toothwart, Trout Lilly, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and purple and yellow Violets. Soon to blossom are Mayapple, Bloodroot, Iris and Broadleaf Toothwort. More pictures in the flickr photostream.

April 2011 Aiken, South Carolina Trip

During the first week of April, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Aiken, SC with three friends. We were on a journey that began with an invitation for me to exhibit photography at the Aiken Center for the Arts. http://www.aikencenterforthearts.org/
Our dear friend, Kristin Brown, is the Executive Director of the Center. She suggested a trip for the bridge group, which was to include volunteering at the nearby Masters and attending the exhibit opening night. Unfortunately, the volunteering opportunity fell through, but she kept the four of us busy with tours, lunches and dinners, in addition to the opening. What a great trip it was! We met many of her friends and wonderful volunteers at the Center, toured Aiken on a trolley hosted by a long-time friend of our Pittsburgh acquaintance, Barbara Bolls, and endured interesting weather for both 10-hour trips there and back by car.

I can't wait to go back to Aiken! It is a beautiful, historic city that has Court Tennis, horses and dirt roads for their comfort, early spring flowering and incredible shopping opportunities.
